This post is WAAAAAAY overdue, but… Last November I decided to participate in Fairytale week for the first time! And while I was excited to join the amazing community of illustrators who do this challenge every year I was also really nervous. This type of illustration is really out of my comfort zone. I’m not the kind of illustrator who creates magical scenes and unique characters. If i’m being totally honest I don’t really even consider myself an illustrator. I don’t know why… I mean, yeah I guess I am an illustrator but I always introduce my business and what I create through Reyn Paper Co first and foremost. So for me this was stepping out on a limb.

To help me rein in all the possibilities I decided to focus the prompts around one central theme. I had been playing around with some squirrel sketches so I thought it might be fun to create a world for a squirrel named Squire.  As far as mediums, I took the opportunity to tryout procreate’s pencil and crayon brushes. I didn’t create a sketch for all 12 prompts but I did manage to do 4 plus a sketch for Folktale Week 2018.

Here are the prompts I completed:

  • Forest
  • Magic
  • Witchcraft
  • Animal

I tried out some different styles, mediums and techniques but all in all I’m petty happy with the finished sketches. My favorite is the one I did for the Folktale Week Feature.

Hi, I'm Kristen. Lover of stationery, wearer of yoga pants, professional waffle eater and Co-Owner of R.P.C. Most days you can find me in my studio alongside my better business half (mom), my stupid cute dog (Curry), and my stupid cute husband (Garreth) working on our next big idea for Reyn Paper Co. I love community, encouraging others to find their passion and helping entrepreneurs create a future they love.
